  Begin or continue your Cutthroat Slam journey with Idaho's native Bonneville and Yellowstone cutthroat trout in some of the most amazing country you'll ever see! You are also close to waters that hold the Snake River Fine-spotted cutthroat trout. Knock out three birds (fish) with one stone.

  Bert Williams and Jeff Jones (outing co-hosts) have reserved a campground about 15 minutes from Lava Hot Springs that can accommodate 6 trailers and many tents. Contact Bert at (208) 631-8507 or bswilliams63@gmail.com for information regarding the campground and reserving a spot.

  Bert and Jeff will provide additional information about the area and its fishery to those who have questions and to those who register to attend. Contact Bert as above.

  This is our first BVFF outing to this area and fishery and looks to be a terrific event. We hope you decide to join us in the pursuit of the Idaho Native Cutthroat Slam!

  McCall/Cascade Area Fisheries

  The outings team is working on the details for our outing to the McCall/Cascade area from September 19th to 22nd. 

  Our plan is to learn more about this area and explore the many possibilities for fishing from family ponds, the NF Payette River, Little Payette Lake, and the numerous opportunities for high mountain lakes you can drive your car to and the ones that require a hike. The possibilities will give all members a chance to find a perfect location.

  In 2023, we held this outing in August and the fishing was good. The move to September will improve this from good to great! (fingers crossed). Head on up and catch an arctic grayling and complete your Idaho Arctic Grayling Challenge.

  We will be building the details of the outing, however, now is the time for you to plan your lodging in the McCall/Cascade area.

  Steelhead Fishing - Clearwater River Near Orofino

  If you're a steelhead fishing veteran or newbie, the Clearwater River provides some terrific fall fishing. Bob Harder is planning an outing for this iconic Idaho gamefish and will be our host at the Pink House Hole campground which provides RV spaces and room for tent camping. Orofino is nearby and might have lodging. Expect crowds so plan your accommodations soon!

  Anticipate fall weather in Idaho that can range from sunny and 80F to blizzards and below freezing temps (just wait 15 minutes and it will change). Bring clothing to meet the weather demands.

  Bob is working to get a Clearwater River area guide service involved to show us how to fish for steelhead from a boat or by wading. The river can be floated from a drift boat or raft or there are plenty of wadable sections to fish.

  He is also working with a local fly casting instructor to provide two-handed fly rod casting lessons. Look for this opportunity to be posted as an event in August/September once details are firmed up.

  The drive from Boise is about 5 hours. In addition to an Idaho fishing license, you will need a steelhead permit.

  The Boise Valley Fly Fishers are pleased to announce the 18th Annual Western Idaho Fly Fishing Expo to be held on January 31-February 1, 2025.  This event is now one of the premier fly fishing shows in the Northwest.

  The event will be held at Expo Idaho (www.expoidaho.com) in Garden City, Idaho, with indoor casting ponds, demonstration fly tying, and a fly tying theater that will showcase the art and skills of creating hand-tied flies.  Educational presentations on fly fishing and destination fly fishing by local and regional experts.  This year the Expo will highlight fly fishing education, with experts covering topics of how to fish, where to fish, casting, entomology, and tackle setups for both new and experienced anglers.

  Be sure your fly fishing friends, neighbors, and relatives are aware of the event.  Join them in attending.

  The Boise Valley Fly Fishers is the oldest fly fishing organization in Idaho, founded in 1971. The Boise metropolitan area has grown significantly in the past few years, and so has the local interest in fly fishing.  Our mission to promote the sport of fly-fishing through education and conservation activities is dependent upon a successful Expo. Instruction in fly tying, casting, and fly fishing ethics has been the foundation of this event.  We plan to expand our educational workshops this year, while continuing a wide range of dynamic lectures.
